Greetings everyone,

As some of you may have noticed, I deleted my ToG account a few hours ago. I am sure that I have played against or alongside many of you, and hope that in the 6 months that I was part of ToG I earned your respect and admiration. I had some very enjoyable games with many talented players, and I will miss that.

However, I have become frustrated with this game and many of the players in it and wish to play no more. Perhaps I am guilty of nostalgia, but in the beginning nearly all players were respectful and displayed good sportsmanship as we all struggled to learn how this game worked and to develop our own strategies. However, at some point that changed; players became too concerned with their win percentages, scores, number of badges, and other statistics. When I saw this happening, I left the game for about two months, naively thinking that maybe the good old days would return as the bad apples grew tired of the game and left.

In the few weeks since I resumed play I see that not only has that issue not corrected itself, but activity has dropped and it has become harder to get a game going. This is of course an issue that is well known, but because I am patient, it doesn't bother me tremendously. The issue of poor sportsmanship and statistics being more precious to players than true competition does. Therefore, I would urge anyone who reads this, to please treat other players as you would wish them to. Don't change starting positions immediately before launching a game, don't change teams to get an unfair numerical advantage, and don't start games with short turns when the other player(s) are offline for a quick rush and ill-gotten victory. Although many players don't act in this way, a sizeable number use such methods often, or even in a few cases, as their standard operating procedure. I have no desire to deal with such unfair methods (and especially when I have seen them used often by some of the top 100 players). [For full disclosure and to not be labeled a hypocrite, there have been a few times that I inappropriately started a game when my opponent was idle or involved in another short-turn game; I have offered apologies and have ceased acting in that way].

I also see that there is nearly no flow of tips and goodwill to new players. Most see them as an easy win and nothing more. I have often engaged new players when in a game with them, and although I end up winning because of their inexperience or poor strategy, they go to their next game with a greater knowledge of the game's mechanics and a few hints on how to improve their play. I would suggest that anyone with true concerns about the state of the ToG community act in a way similar to this, for I can think of no reason more likely to keep a new player from staying than losing half-a-dozen games to experienced players and not getting some help with understanding the game from them while being owned. (Most new players don't know about the triangular unit relationships - start there and then ask if there are any other questions that you could answer).

Anyway, there are my thoughts in the form of a rant/wall-of-text that will probably only have limited viewership. But for those of you that do see it, please think about my suggestions and act according to them if you find them worthy.

And for everyone out there - goodbye and best of luck in your future battles.

Today is a sad day. I've lost a friend more than anything. Niels, as much as I hate to see you go, I respect your decision, and wish you well in your future. Come stop by IRC some time.

I have turned away a few players recently, because they state they do not know how to play, and have not watched the demo video, therefore I send them there, and ask them to come back after they have at least watched it.

As much as I know everyone who posts here will say: "Yeah, I help new players whenever I get the chance" The truth is, you don't always. Everybody is guilty of that. No matter your rank, alliance, or general interest. As you stated Neils, something does need to be done, but with an unknown and unexplained lack of Admin, there isn't much more we can do about this.

Therefore, Farewell Niel, you were a great friend. And as a tribute to your greatness, OL will display your name on their banner, both as an act of parting, and because you were only a few thousand points from it. you will forever stand apart of OL and its history.

Hopefully, the forum mods will allow you some time to come back and see this, or I will see you around somewhere, to tell you all of this.

And because you wont be able to see the new banner, it is as follows, sporting your name and Icadil's name as new players.

And I know I'm beating this to death with a stick, but goodbye Niels, you can be sure 1 person will miss you.

Well, Vivi or Admin are the only ones that can unmask Niels, so it is up to them.

Also, goodbye Niels.

Thank you very much Tharbakim - perhaps some day I shall return and make up those 5000 points so that I can legitimately be on our banner ... one never knows what the future holds. Thanks for being my friend as well - keep OL strong and always fight the good fight.

Also thanks for the farewell Kapso, I feel special for having gotten one from a moderator.

wow, I don't even now what to say. Niels you were definitley among my first inspirations and one of very people I look up to in this game. It sucks to see you leaving even from a lack of activity for some while now. Anyway it has been great getting my a** handed to me time and time again but still learning from you the entire time. There is little I can do to give back to you but I hope that a thank you and a good luck will suffice on some level. I hope to hear your name again in future games-you truly have a level of intelligence that I can only admire.

Thank you for the kind words Icadil, I truly appreciate them. I was unaware that my presence in this game had been so positive for others - had I known I may not have been so rash as to delete my account.
Don't worry about your supposed 'debt' good sir, gaining a friend is more than enough compensation for a little bit of strategy that may not be useful beyond the confines of this website.
Best of luck in your current and future games, and thanks again.

Farewell Niels.

I have been around for a while, and have seen firsthand the great things you did here. Any new players that happen to join will especially be missing out on your willingness to help.

ToG loses an exceptional player. I wish you well,

Hater of politicizing.
:(

Aves summed it up pretty well... damn post stealer.

You were always an honorable opponent, or as seemed more often, teammate. I hate to see you go, but I totally understand where you are coming from. I myself have not logged onto my account in about a month or so, and I only logged on here to say goodbye.

So goodbye. Orange will never be the same (that was your colour of choice, yes?) Good luck in your next endeavors - whatever they may be.

Thank you for the sentiments all of you.

Nadabethyname - you are a fine player and I enjoyed our games a lot.

Aves - I hope that the commitment I gave to the betterment of this game is repeated by newer players, and once again, as I said to Kapso - I feel special for the farewell from a moderator.

Comrade Jaques - you were one of my good friends from this game, and I was disappointed to not see you around in the few weeks I've been back from my self-imposed exile. If I ever return to this game, I'll be sure to shoot you a PM saying so. (and yes, Orange, for I learned of this game via the IRON forums of CN, and my colour there transferred here)
